Fish also substantially limit the range, so no one comes out happy.

There are so many things wrong with this comparison I don't know where to start.

But for starters, a US Navy missile destroyer can kill a satellite.


I think the GP assumption is that there is a bad actor intent on serious harm.

I'm not really sure where I side on this.

Ideally Defense would be able to conduct exercises without worrying about harming civilians. But that seems impossible to drive to 0.

I think the top level commenter comes across as a bit one sided. How often is due-diligence done by the pilots? Could the guidance provided be more well defined and reduce these incidences to several orders of magnitude less? Hopefully the military is not purposefully inflating incidences for nefarious purposes or instigating specific instances.


Which only matters to consumers. Businesses at scale have teams doing this stuff and costs matter.

I've written on this before but Oxide are sitting in very narrow market segment in terms of value and I can't see how it's viable.


The market is anyone who wants a private cloud but isn’t as big as an Amazon or Google who could build it themselves. Seems like a big enough TAM.

If large corps see the value and build whole data-centers with oxide racks, a few large costumers alone can be huge.

I suspect part of this raise has to with Antropic using Oxide at pretty large scale.

If its really true that things will move from public cloud to private in large scale, its not narrow at all.

And they have a pretty clear fitting product range they can expand into.

You may not have heard, but the US government just prints money.

Banks make a lot of it, too.

We've desperately needed secure identity verification for business callers for years, so we can start the decades long process of changing people's instincts about it.

There's no good reason any business should be able to contact me without whoever is calling cryptographically proving they're that business and my phone showing the name and logo from a copy or mirror of an official database.

It should just be a standard part of business registration processes.


But for which country, state, province, or city?

Put in the hierarchical angle, and we're kind of back at domain names.

That may be the case but the dishwasher uses less power and water then you do washing dishes.

It's also not like I'm lacking for dishes that need hand washing anyway either: very large sauce pans, pots and chopping boards aren't fitting in the dishwasher anyway.

Electric kettles have done this for decades. The tech is also in sous vide machines.

Yes and both those things aren't what I cook pasta in.

You can bring the water to a boil and dial back the heat when you add the pasta. Will still cook, but no boiling over. Saves a bit of electricity as well.

Best we can do is Wifi to set your timer.

And no one has really come up with an alternative: home assistant is good, but it's not for the non-techy.

I will squarely blame IPv4 for some of this: NAT has meant that the key application people might want to use is broken by default (remote device access) without mediation servers.

No, practicality is not the main reason these unnecessary connections are added. The main reasons are 1. to sell and enforce subscriptions and 2. to collect and sell data.

Is it just easier to get your car seat warmers to work when they can connect to the internet and make sure you're paid up?


I have some IoT devices I made for myself. The all connect to the central server (the one I run myself of course).

It is much, much easier to do things when central server is around. This is especially true for embedded devices which have limited resources and cannot be updated easily and safely. Close all the incoming ports and the chances of your device joining the botnet fall dramatically. Keep that port open and you'll see yourself mentioned all over the net in the context of "horrible security, don't buy".

The only hope is multi-vendor systems which connect to central hub - zigbee, matter, etc.. - but sadly they not very popular, as wifi is everywhere, access is cheap (the chip can found for under $1 today), and hub-based are harder to get started with.


Unless you advocate for something reckless like "all incoming connections allowed", you will need a central aerver even with IPv6.

HomeKit works great as long as you have devices that support it. The only thing you need a server for is if you want to be able to control things while you're away from home. Control/notification on the LAN is entirely local. Setup for non-technical users is easier, too. You scan a code through a standardized flow, rather than downloading Yet Another App and creating Yet Another Account you'll forget the password to.

Being tied to the internet happens because manufacturers want to be able to watch your usage, sell you ads, and make you buy more stuff from them when they decided your existing hardware is "too old" and shouldn't be supported anymore.


The key there is you still notice it. The format is less important then the fact that there's enough signal there telling you "something is wrong".

Because legally then it's a copy and not a format conversion.

This story has a lot of details left out and is a magnet for illinformed commentators: the reason the originals are destroyed is because it is legal to do so for the purposes of format conversion, but not legal to retain the originals under copyright law.
